Many in law enforcement and the military at some point contemplate a transition from government work to private sector. Initially it appears the transition should be seamless, but that is not always the case. The demands, expectations and culture of organizations and companies is diverse. How are applicants going to set themselves apart from so many others who might be competing for the limited and skilled positions within the security profession? What steps should you take now to prepare for the transition?
The Kansas City Chapter of ASIS International has gathered a panel of security professionals that have successfully made the transition into the private sector. They will discuss what should be consider by applicants to set themselves apart from the field of expanding pool of qualified applicants.
If you are currently law enforcement or military, this is an event that you do not want to miss. For those who are already in the corporate security industry, there will certainly be key take-aways that you will learn from the panel on how to further your professional career.

Biographies of Panelists
Theresa Bentch, MBA, CPP, CBCP; Director of Security, EH&S, IT Risk Assurance; Garmin International
Theresa has been active in the security profession for more than 20 years with experience in the U.S. Army, Corporate Security and Safety, Information Technology and Law Enforcement. As the Director of Security at Garmin International she is charged with security operations and security systems design, investigations and incident management, risk management/mitigation, developing and implementing policies, emergency and crisis response, safety and environmental management systems and information security compliance programs around the globe. Theresa holds a Bachelor’s in Security Management and a Master’s in Business Administration. She is board certified by ASIS International as a Certified Protection Professional (CPP). After serving 9 years with the Overland Park Police Department Theresa transitioned to Corporate Security in 2013. She has served 22 years in the Army Reserve and holds the rank of Major.
Michael Betten, MS, CPP; Director of Security, Stowers Institute for Medical Research; Kansas City, MO.
Michael retired after 25 years of service with the Overland Park Police Department. He is the Director of Security for Stowers Institute for Medical Research overseeing and managing all aspects of the physical security program. He is a member of ASIS International and served as their Regional 3A Vice President. He is the certification representative for the Kansas City ASIS International chapter helping other security professionals prepare and study for the ASIS certifications, primarily the Certified Protection Professional (CPP). Michael has a Master of Science Degree (MS) in Security Management and assisted two American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) sub committees in the development of test methods for security glazing materials and windows. He has served as a consultant to large corporations, the U.S. Department of Justice and was an adjunct professor for 10 years instructing on the fundamentals of private security. Mike is board certified by ASIS International as a Certified Protection Professional (CPP) and mentors individuals pursuing a career in private security.
Anthony Ell; Lead Corporate Security Specialist: Spire of Kansas City, MO
Anthony manages the overall security strategy and operations for all Spire west facilities, employees, properties, and critical gas pipeline infrastructure. As the Lead Specialist he is also responsible for working directly with the team’s three other regional Security Specialists. Mr. Ell has been with Spire since January 2016 and he reports directly to the company’s Manager of Corporate Security in St. Louis, Missouri. Prior to joining the Spire Corporate Security Team Mr. Ell served over 30 years in law enforcement with the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department. He retired in May of 2015 and held the rank of Major at the time of his retirement. During his long and distinguished career, he received numerous awards and commendations and possesses a high level of experience in patrol, investigations, tactical response, incident command and police executive management. He is a lifelong resident of Kansas City, MO and a 1984 graduate of Missouri Southern State College where he earned an Associate of Science degree in Law Enforcement and a Bachelor of Science degree in the Administration of Justice.
